Survivors of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria have secured a massive payout of $500 million. The settlement involved 10,000 people, including families of those killed in the fire, the injured and those who lost property.

The Kilmore East-Kinglake bushfire devastated 125,000 hectares of land and destroyed over 1,000 homes.

The Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission found the bushfire was caused by an old SP AusNet power line.

Though the tragedy of Black Saturday can never be understated, the case highlights the need for councils to have high levels of cover.

Member Councils of Statewide Mutual are covered up to $400 million for Public Liability. Our nearest competitor only provides cover for up to $200 million. r.
