2019 AFM SCHOLARSHIP

We are delighted to have the support and generosity of AFM again this year, with their scholarship winner getting the opportunity to fly to Boston and visit the FM Global SimZone in 2019/2020.

AFM is offering the opportunity of a lifetime for a Statewide Mutual Member to learn more about property loss prevention, and see FM Global’s approach to loss prevention and the research behind it, at the FM Global Research Campus.

To enter the scholarship competition, you will need to submit a short essay (and/or video presentation) that explains what your council is doing to protect your council’s property from a peril. The best submission will become the winner! We want to learn about the projects or plans council has proposed or initiated.

Deadline for entries is close of business Friday 9 August, 2019

2018 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The Challenge

For a business to be resilient it needs to eliminate vulnerabilities and to ensure it continues to be operational. A major fire, wind or flood event will disrupt normal council operations. Eliminating or reducing the risk of a hazard is the best method for ensuring a council remains operational through and after the loss.

We would like to learn how your council has protected its buildings from a loss. Write a short essay, or video presentation, that explains what your council is doing.

Submissions should meet the following requirements

  1. Submission should be a short (max. 500 words), alternatively a video addressing the topic, or a video-taped presentation would be acceptable. Video presentations should be no longer than 5 minutes duration.
  2. Full contact details must be provided, including applicants name, organisation details, phone and email contact details.
  3. The scholarship is open to all Statewide Council employees.
  4. Multiple entries maybe submitted from a single council.
  5. Each applicant must consent to their details being used for marketing purposes directly related to the scholarship.

Deadline for entries is close of business, 9th August, 2019 – one scholarship will be awarded.

Congratulations to the 2018 AFM Scholarship Winner

AFM Scholarship Award – Naamon Eurell – Statewide Mutual, Andrew Mason – Wagga Wagga City Council & Tony Cavka – AFM.

Andrew Mason from Wagga Wagga City Council

Andrew’s submission provided a detailed summary of how Wagga Wagga City Council have endeavored to make their organisation more resilient.

In 2010, the Wagga Wagga region experienced a devastating flood whereby several of the Council’s largest buildings were exposed to the flood waters. Following these floods, Council implemented a multi-faceted, permanent solution which would ensure their assets are protected from flood water in a future event.

This involved installation of various physical flood protection items such as flood gates, pumping stations and a new levee. Wagga Wagga City Council has chosen to be resilient and future proof their property from flooding; which aligns with AFM risk management philosophy. A big congratulations to Andrew and the team.
