Jina Bogdanovski once pictured her career in sports, not insurance. But one entry-level job at Statewide changed everything.

Since then, she’s spent more than a decade working in liability and local government claims. And today, as Divisional Manager – Claims, Jina leads the team supporting our member councils through their most challenging matters.

We sat down with her to talk about her unexpected career path, her lessons along the way – and what keeps her passionate about the work.

Q: What were you doing before joining Statewide?

I actually thought I was going to be a PE teacher. I’ve played sport my whole life – especially soccer – so it felt natural, at that time, to pursue coaching. But while I was doing my teaching placement and coaching at a private soccer academy, I realised it wasn’t what I wanted to do.

Then one day, I came across an entry-level insurance job ad for NRMA in Hurstville. That was close to where I live. After spending about four hours a day commuting to my coaching job, the idea of working nearby was very appealing.

So I applied for it, but didn’t get it. Then a Statewide role came up and this time I was successful – and that’s how I landed in insurance.

Q: How did your career progress from there?

Well, that first role was all about helping the team with the basics, like filing paperwork and registering files. But the more I worked with claims, the more I found myself enjoying it. So I pursued a degree in law while still working full time.

After about four years with Statewide, I left to gain broader experience in the insurance industry. I worked at IAG, first at CGU as a liability claims consultant before ending up at NRMA doing CTP claims work for the Canberra region.

After that, I moved into a local government risk officer role with Sutherland Shire Council. And two years later, when an opportunity to return to Statewide popped up, I went for it.

Q: And how has that experience – working at a council – shaped the way you support Statewide’s members now?

It helps me see the full picture.

I know how councils are structured, how the departments work, what the pressures are, and how decisions move through the organisation. I also understand the relationship with the councillors, and the governance environment they operate in. Because I’ve been there.

So when a claim comes in, I think about the technical side of things, like the requirements and desired outcomes. But at the same time, I’m also considering what the council needs, what constraints they’re working within and how we can help them navigate the process.

Q: Since returning to Statewide, how has your career evolved?

I came back about five years ago now. Since then, I’ve taken on several positions – from Claims Manager to Technical Claims Specialist, then Assistant Manager for Claims. And earlier this year, I was appointed Divisional Manager for Claims.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?

No two days are ever the same.

Even after 10 years, new and unusual situations still come across my desk. Some claims really challenge me to think carefully about the circumstances, the legal considerations and what it means for the council.

That constant learning is what keeps me motivated.

Q: What are some of your career highlights so far?

Presenting at the Statewide annual conference – twice now – is definitely up there. The first time, I’d never spoken in front of so many people before. Being asked to present again was a real vote of confidence.

Another major highlight was managing a matter that went to appeal. The initial decision found council liable. We coordinated the entire appeal process and the decision was overturned. It was a fantastic outcome for our member – and a proud moment for me professionally.

And of course, my overall career progression. I never thought I could be capable of this kind of leadership role. I’m really proud of how far I’ve come with Statewide’s support.

Q: How about career challenges?

Dealing with claims involving third parties can be difficult on a day-to-day basis. Especially when we deliver bad news about their claims not being paid. It takes resilience to do that over and over.

There have also been times when I’d faced complex issues and had no immediate answer. It can be hard, but working my way through, asking for support when needed and learning to overcome those challenges has really helped me grow.

Q: What do you love most about being part of Statewide?

The people. Both inside Statewide and within our member councils.

It’s always an enjoyable day at work. Everyone in our team is engaged and supportive – all motivated to achieve the best outcomes for our members. Our members are also fantastic to work with. They’re open, understanding and easy to deal with.

That’s one of the reasons I came back. Not many people return to a workplace they’ve left, but I jumped at the opportunity. Statewide’s culture and people are just amazing.

Q: Outside of work, how do you unwind?

I used to love playing soccer. But now I take great pleasure in coaching my godson. I’m also a major Formula 1 fan – in fact, I just came back from the Las Vegas race. Now awaiting the Melbourne Grand Prix in 2026.

I’m also a gym junkie, and I’ve dabbled in Muay Thai a little. I love being outdoors in summer, and I’m always keen to try a new restaurant.

And I read a lot. I even have a Bookstagram where I review books. I’m on track to hit 40 books this year, which will be a personal record!

Q: Finally – any life motto to share?

My personal motto is to work smarter, not harder. So if there’s a smarter, better way to do something, I always want to find it. And that mindset has helped me throughout my career.
